Tour Plan
Your desert adventure begins in the vibrant city of Marrakech, where your driver picks you up early in the morning. Soon, you’ll cross the beautiful High Atlas Mountains via the winding Tizi n'Tichka Pass, soaking in views of villages perched on hillsides. As you descend, you’ll reach Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient ksar known for its red mudbrick buildings and film-worthy views. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most photographed spots.
After exploring Ait Ben Haddou, you’ll travel through Ouarzazate, often called the "Hollywood of Morocco" thanks to its famous film studios. Then, continue toward Agdez, where the scenery shifts as you enter the lush Draa Valley—home to Morocco’s longest palm oasis. You’ll follow this beautiful valley until you reach Zagora, a calm desert town that once marked a major stop along old caravan routes. Here, you’ll enjoy a warm dinner and rest in a cozy local guesthouse.
After breakfast, your day begins with a visit to Tamegroute, a unique desert village known for its deep heritage. You’ll explore a historic library holding ancient Qur’ans and rare manuscripts, then visit pottery workshops where artisans create the famous green-glazed ceramics of the region. It's a perfect place to learn how desert life blends creativity and resilience.
Next, you’ll drive through Tagounite and on to M’hamid El Ghizlane, the last town before the vast open Sahara begins. This is where the road ends—and the real adventure begins. Along the way, you’ll stop to meet local nomads living in traditional tents. Share a cup of sweet mint tea, hear their stories, and feel the deep peace of desert life.
From here, a 4x4 takes you off-road, across sand tracks and rocky plains, with a stop at the Sacred Oasis, a green jewel in the middle of the desert. Finally, you’ll arrive at the heart of the dunes—your destination, the Erg Chigaga Camp. These dunes are among the largest and most remote in Morocco, and they offer the perfect mix of stillness and wonder.
Before sunset, hop on a camel and ride through the dunes just as the light turns golden. The moment feels timeless. Back at camp, a delicious Moroccan dinner awaits, followed by live Berber music, a glowing campfire, and skies full of stars. You’ll spend the night in a luxury tent with comfortable bedding, private bathroom, and all the charm of Saharan hospitality. The Erg Chigaga Camp offers true luxury in the middle of nowhere.
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes—a soft, golden light you’ll never forget. After breakfast, your journey back begins, but the landscapes keep surprising you. You'll drive across the Iriqui Lake, a dry salt flat surrounded by wild, open terrain. It's peaceful, vast, and totally different from anywhere else in Morocco.
Continue toward Foum Zguid, a desert outpost, then on to Taznakht, a town famous for handwoven Berber carpets. If you’re interested, you can visit a local cooperative and see how women create intricate rugs using ancient techniques passed down through generations. After some rest and possibly a tasty tagine, you’ll return to Marrakech by the early evening.
